Purpose

Reporting to the Senior Manager System Operations, the Rail Operations Manager is an integral team leader of the operations team. This role will be responsible for the safe rail operations of the entire RM network, as well as managing the relationship of Host Railways and other external partnerships.

This role may at times be required to support rail yard switching and is deemed Safety Critical and pre-employment testing will be required. Final candidates must successfully pass a safety critical medical exam and will undergo medical monitoring as prescribed by Transport Canada. This position requires you to periodically access an active railway area where impaired performance could result in a significant incident affecting the health and safety of team members, guests, the public, property or the environment.

Key Areas of Accountability

Safety

• Advanced knowledge of various regulatory bodies (Federal regulations, Transport Canada etc.)

• Lead the compliance of all Canadian Railway Operating Rules (CROR), and General Operating Instructions (GOI) and all other safety policies, procedures & rules.

• Identify, protect & report safety hazards, escalate to OH&S Committee

• Support the investigation of workplace accidents and implement corrective actions as required.

• Ensure compliance with all Transport Canada auditing requirements.

• Maintain basic first aid level provided by the company

• Responsible for tracking the safe, efficient movement of all trains.

• Responsible for the training and qualification of RM Switch persons and Locomotive Operators

• Represents and advocates on behalf of the company in Safety Management System (SMS) and Regulator related Policy and Industry discussions.

Rail & Guest Operations

• Lead the successful execution of the Operating Plan to safely achieve on time train performance.

• Manage movements of RM trains & key relationships with RM's host railway partners.

• This position requires the ability to train for and perform switching duties.

• Execute and manage operational targets and metrics.

• Accountable for Rail Operations in the Operations Centre

• Ensure Rail Operations and switching plans are executed with the eye to our Guest experience.

• Support Guest Operations requirements as Manager of Ops Center when required.

• Key member of the EOC Operations Branch

• Anticipates Operational needs to provide high quality service as well as build and maintain lasting client and partner relationships.

People Leadership

• Mentor your direct reports to instill a culture of ownership, achieve guest experience KPIs.

• Lead an engaged and empowered team through goal setting, regular 1:1s, coaching and reviews).

• Ensure your direct reports are familiar with the strategic plan and key business metrics, how the company is trending and their role in driving success.

• Be a role model for team members by demonstrating the company values and adhering to policies, processes, and service standards.

• Oversee and support internal teams and your direct reports in pre-season preparation, the recruitment process, and the delivery of training programs.

• Lead change processes and communication from the planning team as required.

• Ensure implications of decisions on other departments at RM are considered.

• Ensure consistent team member performance management.

• Responsible for the training of our Rail Operations Specialists

Work Environment

• Occasional travel is required.

• May require lifting to 50 lbs. on occasion.

• Rail Industrial work site requires walking & sitting throughout the day.

• Typical hours during the operating season will require weekend and evening work.

Qualifications

Education/Certifications/Knowledge

• Valid class 5 BC Driver's License

• Post Secondary education in a related discipline an asset

Experience

• 5+ years of qualified railroad experience

• 3+ years of managing railroad employees

Skills

• Advanced decision-making, problem solving, critical thinking skills in high pressure situations.

• Advanced ability to lead, influence, negotiate & communicate effectively with internal/external partners & contractors.

• Strong coordination and organizational skills with a desire to maintain brand standards.

• Competent with the MS Office Suite including applications.

Compensation

  • The base salary offered for this role is $70,930 - $88,663 per annum and can vary based on job-related expertise, qualifications, experience and internal equity.
