Reporting to the Supervisor, Mechanical, the Mechanical Hand / Helper is an integral member of the Rocky Mountaineer Team. The incumbent in this position is mainly responsible for completing work orders, assisting trades persons, and supporting the operating plan.

This position requires you to periodically access an active railway area where impaired performance could result in a significant incident affecting the health and safety of team members, guests, the public, property, or the environment.

Key Areas of Accountability

• General repairs, maintenance tasks, and material handling

• Operate hand tools and machinery

• Execute nightly mechanical tasks

• Troubleshoot diverse equipment types and support cross functional trade defect repairs

• Perform required maintenance on tools and equipment

• Support team members interdepartmentally when required

• Willingness to participate in company initiatives related to personal development

Safety

• Comply with all Canadian Railway Operating Rules (CROR), and General Operating Instructions (GOI) and all other safety policies, procedures & rules

• Identify, protect & report safety hazards to management & OH&S Committee

• Use required PPE as prescribed by Rocky Mountaineer and host railways

• Required to attend and maintain basic first aid level provided by Rocky Mountaineer

Operations

• Support the successful execution of the Operating Plan

• Support movements of RM trains & rail equipment

• This position may require the ability to train for and perform switching duties

• Support execution of provisioning work orders

• Support operational targets and metrics

Mechanical

• Ability to read and understand manuals and other instructions pertaining to work orders

• Ability and willingness to train for and perform safely additional mechanical skills including forklift operations, boom lifts, jacks, drop tables and other relevant equipment and tasks

• Repair, maintain, and troubleshoot equipment

• Support the successful execution of Predictive Maintenance Plan

• Support and advise other team members regarding equipment work orders

• Ability to work with external contractors to complete work orders

• Complete work orders to a high standard of quality; safely and efficiently

Qualifications

Education, Certification, Licenses

• High school graduation or equivalent

• Class 5 BC driver's license

• First Aid Certification is an asset

Experience/Skills

• Qualification and/or proven knowledge in safe heavy equipment operations such as forklifts, cranes, etc. is an asset

• Experience handling small hand tools such as grinders, drills, etc. is an asset

• Understanding of mechanical systems such as electrical, plumbing, and refrigeration is an asset

• Previous exposure working in a Canadian Railway Operating Rules environment is an asset

• Strong mechanical aptitude

• High attention to detail with a desire to ensure quality of workmanship

• Able to take personal accountability and be adaptable with a problem solver mindset

• Able to work cross-functionally

• Comfortable using computers and other electronic devices

Work Environment

• May require occasional travel

• Physical demands may require lifting to 80 lbs. on occasion

• Rail industrial site that requires walking and sitting throughout the day

• 24/7 operation that may require varied work schedules

• Indoor/outdoor working environment

Wage: $26.95/hour

Schedule: During our operating season you will work, 3/12h shifts, from 8:30pm to 8:30am. In the maintenance season you will be working 4/10h shifts from 7am to 5pm.
