Purpose

Reporting to the Manager, Mechanical, the Supervisor is an integral member of the Rocky Mountaineer Operations and Mechanical team. The Supervisor provides oversight to the front line / skilled trades teams. The Supervisor, Mechanical, will also be responsible for executing the operating plan, managing front line trades teams, and assisting in project management for capital programs.

This position is deemed Safety Critical and pre-employment testing will be required. Final candidates must successfully pass a safety critical medical exam and will undergo medical monitoring as prescribed by Transport Canada. This position requires you to periodically access an active railway area where impaired performance could result in a significant incident affecting the health and safety of team members, guests, the public, property, or the environment.

Compensation

  • Pay range: $82,000 - $93,000 per annum
  • Eligible for Rocky Mountaineer's Short Term Incentive Plan (STIP) up to 10%

Key Areas of Accountability

  • Engage and lead the frontline mechanical team
  • Monitor and manage the workload of the frontline mechanical team, including the development of metrics to monitor efficiency
  • Inspect work done and validate quality of workmanship through work order completion processes
  • Identify areas of improvement and ensure team member training is maintained, recommending new training accordingly
  • Work collaboratively with team members to resolve issues in a timely and effective manner
  • Facilitate goal planning and goal management for team members
  • Responsible for hiring, assessing performance, conducting investigations and exercising corrective action plans for workplace incidents
  • Develop meaningful relationships among, internal partners, external suppliers, and contractors
  • Manage workforce resources effectively
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements
  • Conduct safety and performance audits
  • Deliver site specific safety orientations to team members and partners
  • Execute maintenance and capital project deliverables to ensure asset reliability
  • Organize, facilitate, and document maintenance, provisioning, and servicing work orders
  • Develop, execute, and manage SOPs

Safety

  • Comply with Canadian Railway Operating Rules (CROR), General Operating Instructions (GOI), Federal Railroad Association (FRA), and all other safety policies, procedures, and rules
  • Execute incident reporting processes ensuring the safety and security of team members, guests, and contractors are met in compliance with the Safety Management System (SMS)
  • Perform safety and performance audits on employees and contractors
  • Meet or exceed safety and security deliverables
  • Maintain basic first aid certification provided by Rocky Mountaineer

Operations

  • Execute the RM Maintenance Vision and Operating Plan
  • Lead operations and mechanical requirements in the Operations Centre
  • Ensure safe movement of all RM equipment
  • Support supply chain initiatives throughout the RM network
  • Support operational and equipment availability requirements
  • Required to train for and perform switching duties

Mechanical

  • Successfully execute the RM Maintenance Vision
  • Required to train in equipment operating skills including forklifts, boom lifts, jacks, drop tables, etc.
  • Ability to support the mechanical team when troubleshooting equipment (ex. reading, understanding and interpreting schematics and manuals)
  • Responsible for the safety and performance of all mechanical team members, contractors, and equipment throughout the RM network
  • Support capital and operational project management processes
  • Ensure training records for RM team members are up to date

Qualifications

Education, Certification, Licenses

  • Operational understanding of trades
  • Relevant mechanical or technical certifications or trade school education is an asset
  • A minimum of 2 years of progressive supervisory experience in a mechanical maintenance or construction environment
  • Secondary School Diploma or equivalent
  • Valid Class 5 Driver's License or equivalent
  • Qualification and/or proven knowledge in safe heavy equipment operations such as forklifts, cranes, etc.
  • Previous qualification under CROR Operating Rules is an asset

Experience/Skills

  • Demonstrated ability to lead and motivate a team of skilled trades workers
  • Attention to detail with a desire to maintain brand standards
  • Project management/coordination experience an asset
  • Ability to troubleshoot across a variety of different mechanical and electrical systems is an asset
  • Effective time management and problem-solving skills
  • Railroad experience is an asset
  • Able to take personal accountability
  • Proficient in MS Office and computer savvy
  • Good communication and leadership skills
  • Proven ability to work cross-functionally
  • First Aid Level 1 Certification is an asset

    Work Environment

    • Occasional travel required
    • Rail industrial site that requires walking and sitting throughout the day
    • 24/7 operation that may require varied work schedules
    • Indoor/outdoor working environment
    • During our operating season, which runs from mid-April to mid-October, you will work a 40-hour weekly schedule. Shifts will include days, nights, and weekends to meet our operational needs. In the maintenance season you will work Mon-Thur 10-hour days or Tues-Fri 10 hour days.
