  • Under the direction of the DPOA Manager/ Designate/ or Registered Nurse Coordinator, plans, develops, implements and evaluates therapeutic recreation and social programs to meet the physical, social, emotional, cognitive, intellectual and spiritual needs of the clients for the designated program.

Detailed Overview

Under the direction of the Recreation Therapist or designate, plans, develops, implements and evaluates therapeutic recreation and social programs to meet the physical, social, emotional, cognitive, intellectual and spiritual needs of the clients for the designated program.
Responsibilities

  1. Plans, implements and evaluates a therapeutic recreation program involving individual and group activities such as arts and crafts, sports, music, mental aerobics, woodworking, cooking, gardening and exercises to meet the client's social, emotional, intellectual and spiritual needs and interests.
  2. Prepares a calendar of events and instructs participants in the techniques and any required adaptations of related activities to meet the needs of the resident.
  3. Monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of Recreation therapy and social programs and recommends program changes; conducts comprehensive therapeutic recreational and social needs assessments; consults with family and nursing/medical staff to determine the activities based on client's needs.
  4. Participates in interdisciplinary team meetings and provides verbal and written progress reports on the emotional well-being and social behaviour of clients to the Recreation Therapist and nursing/medical staff; identifies and recommends community and facility resources that may be of additional interest or need of the client.
  5. Schedules work assignments and provides direction to designated volunteers during activity programs including demonstrating relevant techniques; determines volunteer resources required and participates in the recruitment, selection and training of volunteers.
  6. Maintains a safe environment for clients, families, volunteers and staff by following established emergency and safety practices and procedures; identifies problems related to client safety and care standards and informs the Recreation Therapist or designate.
  7. Coordinates inventory of equipment, tools and materials and makes purchase recommendations.
  8. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

Graduation from a recognized recreational program plus one (1) year recent, related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to deal with others effectively.
  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
  • Ability to supervise.

  • Ability to operate related equipment.
