Detailed Overview

Reporting clinically to the Supervisor, Recreation Therapy and administratively the Manager, Health Services, provides recreation therapy programs to residents by planning, implementing and evaluating recreation programs to contribute to the resident's physical, emotional, mental, social and spiritual well-being for an assigned area; conducts resident assessments, participates in interdisciplinary conferences, maintains resident records and statistics and maintains recreation related equipment and materials.


Responsibilities

  1. Plans, implements and evaluates recreation programs and services to meet the needs of the residents such as community outings, arts and crafts, discussion groups, special events, sensory stimulation and/or intergenerational programs.
  2. Participates in therapeutic recreation re-assessments residents by methods such as completing re-assessment forms, reviewing and revising recreational goals, reviewing records, consulting with the resident, family and team members and gathering relevant information.
  3. Provides orientation, work direction and evaluation of volunteers; liaises between volunteers and other members of the treatment team.
  4. Participates in interdisciplinary team and/or family conferences by methods such as providing information about residents on topics related to recreation services, contributing to the development of an interdisciplinary care plan for individual residents and performing recorder functions when needed; completes required reports, records and workload statistics.
  5. Participates in quality improvement activities by methods such as providing input to the Supervisor Recreation Therapy on policies and procedures, departmental goals, objectives and operational plans and developing new recreation programs and services; provides input regarding the operating and capital budget of department, as required.
  6. Maintains recreation equipment and materials by methods such as cleaning equipment and putting away equipment, maintaining an orderly work area and making recommendations to the Supervisor, Recreation Therapy regarding the purchase, general maintenance and repair of equipment and supplies; monitors and controls the level of supplies and equipment in Therapeutic Recreation.
  7. Plans and implements bus trips for residents; prepares the bus, completes a vehicle safety check and ensures the vehicle is safe for use; drives the bus.
  8. Participates and contributes to education activities such as department and hospital in-services and meetings.
  9. Provides input and feedback to the Manager, Health Services or designate in the recruitment and selection of recreation therapists, as required.
  10. Participates in committee and/or task groups, as assigned.
  11. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

Graduation from a recognized Therapeutic Recreation Diploma Program. One (1) year's recent related experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Eligible for membership in the British Columbia Therapeutic Recreation Association (BCTRA).

Current First Aid Certificate, CPR Level "C" certification and a valid Class IV BC Driver's License.
