JOB SUMMARY

As an Adventure Camp Team Lead, you will be at the forefront of creating a transformative experience for camp leaders and campers! Your role will be multifaceted, encompassing the responsibility of being friendly and supportive to all camp leaders and camp participants while fostering a cohesive team environment. Leading by example, you'll demonstrate the values of teamwork, positivity and resilience in every interaction. Additionally, you'll provide support and guidance to camp leader staff, serving as a mentor and resource to ensure the smooth operation of the camp. At times, you may need to step in to cover camp leader groups, showcasing your adaptability and thriving dynamic in an ever-changing environment.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Support the day-to-day operations of the summer camp program including; camp check in/out, setting up activities and take down/clean up, organizing activities throughout the day and assisting camp leaders in facilitating more challenging activities or campers
  • Know, enforce, and follow all safety guidelines, codes of conduct, and Adventure Camp policies and procedures associated with the camp and all program areas. This includes but is not limited to being responsible for leader and campers' safety and knowledge of their whereabouts at all times
  • Mentor, support and work co-operatively with peers, assisting to develop leadership skills and problem-solving knowledge
  • Act as a role model demonstrating responsible, ethical and professional conduct while representing Grouse Mountain as a leader for camp leaders and campers
  • Generate an inspiring and positive team environment with open lines of communication, bring feedback and concerns of camp leaders to supervisory team in a timely fashion
  • Day-to-day proactive problem solving/troubleshooting with misbehaving campers, assisting camp leaders during the day when dealing with campers who need more support and corrective resolutions, with teaching, encouragement, natural and logical consequence methods
  • Assist in maintaining accurate program records including; daily documentation, attendance and feedback forms
  • Ensure leaders and campers wellbeing by mitigating risks - making everyone's camp experience as fun, safe and rewarding as possible
  • Respond to all first aid calls, unusual incidents and any leaders who need assistance in a rapid, calm and knowledgeable way
  • Communicate effectively with manager, supervisor, peers, parents and campers
  • Assist with training new camp leaders with unfamiliar activities, supporting them through the first few weeks with leading activities when needed
  • Be a helpful, responsive, positive presence for all camp leaders and campers, to keep morale high while constructing an inclusive and supportive environment
  • In the case of an absent camp leader, team leads will be asked to cover their groups
  • Other duties as required

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position reports to Supervisor, Adventure Camps. No direct supervisory responsibilities are given.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND ABILITIES

  • Completion of grade 12 at the start of employment required, post-secondary education related to Education or Tourism an asset
  • Wilderness First Aid Course, 16 hours + or equivalent, or Wilderness & Remote first Aid/OFA required
  • Proficient in Microsoft office, detailed analytical writing skills
  • Previous experience working with children/youth
  • De-escalation training, ECE, crisis intervention training or other childcare certification an asset
  • Experience in, but not limited to, at least 3 of the following areas;
    • Outdoor education, survival skills, bush crafts
    • Archery, Axe Throwing
    • Youth leadership development
    • Knowledge of local BC wildlife/ecology
    • Map reading and navigation
    • Experience working with children diagnosed with a learning disability, ADD, ADHD, ASD
  • We require a commitment to the full season of summer camp

WORKING CONDITIONS

Hours of Operation are weather dependent. Due to the nature of the business, this position requires flexibility in terms of your work schedule. A variety of work schedules may include a variety of start times, including shifts on weekends and statutory holidays. Shifts require standing for long periods of time, lifting, twisting, and other forms of manual tasks.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

$19.26 to $22.53 hourly
