Athletics and Events Coordinator

Purpose

Reporting to the Director of Athletics and Recreation, the Event Coordinator is responsible for planning, coordinating, and overseeing activities related to the staging and delivery of Canada West and U SPORTS varsity events. The Coordinator is responsible for booking varsity and recreation practices/games, ordering athletics equipment, assisting with facility preparation, running camps, and providing support for varsity events (e.g., assisting with event staffing, facility staff and communicating with opposing teams and officials).

The Coordinator will fill a key role in the continued growth of the University of Northern British Columbia’s (UNBC) varsity athletics program within the context of U SPORTS and the Canada West Universities Athletic Association.

This position will also serve as part of the Student Engagement Team and will collaborate regularly with other divisions and coordinators to contribute to and improve the overall planning and delivery of activities that support student recruitment, engagement, retention, and success at UNBC.

Responsibilities

The Coordinator will participate in the development of both a comprehensive Athletics Event Plan for the Athletics and Recreation Department and a comprehensive Recreation Management plan for the hosting of all Timberwolves activities.

Duties include but are not limited to:

Coordinating and overseeing the implementation of programs, activities, and events within the Recreation Plan and Athletics Event Management Plan;

In consultation with the Director, developing a marketing plan and strategy to encourage participation in varsity game day activities, intramurals, youth camps, and community activities;

Coordinating the effective delivery of post-secondary intramurals including staff training, registration, scheduling, league management, and officiating;

Assisting with the annual UNBC Awards and Academic All Canadian banquet process related to nominations, and selections of major award winners;

Working closely with the Northern Sport Centre (NSC) and City of Prince George (CPG) to coordinate proper scheduling of all UNBC Athletics and Recreation activities (intramurals, varsity practices, and varsity games);

In consultation with the Director, ensuring that all UNBC Athletics events meet the requirements of U SPORTS, Canada West, and UNBC policies and procedures;

Coordinating the set-up of athletic facilities for events;

Coordinating and overseeing game day staff, which may include, but not be limited to, video-tapers, scorekeepers, game assistants, and statisticians;

Liaising with Canada West, U SPORTS, NSC, and CPG staff as required;

Performing administrative tasks such as distributing information packages to visiting officials, medical staff, and teams (score sheets and statistical sheets);

Working closely with the Sport Information Officer to schedule game day staff necessary for all UNBC Athletics events;

Collaborating regularly with other student engagement units to ensure the successful delivery of programming and events, designed to enhance student engagement and student experience;

Maintaining and monitoring content on the UNBC Recreation website; and

Assisting the Director with other Athletic and Recreation department activities, including but not limited to; UNBC Sport Camps, fundraising activities, awards banquets, and community development activities.

Qualifications

The successful candidate must possess a university undergraduate degree in a related field, together with 3-5 years of experience in a post-secondary athletics and recreation setting. Experience should demonstrate progressively increasing responsibilities in a recent program delivery environment, with an emphasis on project and program development, design, management, implementation, assessment, and group facilitation. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered. Knowledge of Canada West and U SPORTS is essential.

Within their experience, the successful candidate must demonstrate:

Understanding of Synergy video software

Understanding of statistical software for basketball and soccer

Understanding of Varsity FIBA game day rules and protocols

Understanding of soccer rules and regulations

Management of intramural leagues

Hosting varsity athletic events

Supervisory and budgetary experience

Proficiency with word processing, spreadsheet, database, and email/calendar software is essential, as well as the ability to utilize internet research, social media, and update web content. You must have excellent interpersonal and organizational skills, be highly self-motivated, with proven leadership abilities. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential. The successful candidate must demonstrate the ability to work independently in a busy, collaborative and dynamic environment, exercising good judgment and problem-solving skills.

This position requires a valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License, and clear Criminal Records Check

Salary

This position has been classified at a Grade 10. The annual salary range for this position is $74,019.40 to $77,058.80 and the normal starting salary will be $74,019.40, pro-rated based on length of term.

Due to the nature of this position, weekend and evening work may be required. Normal hours of work will be 8:30am – 4:30pm, Monday through Friday.
