Detailed Overview
Under the general supervision of the Recreation Therapist provides recreation therapy programs to patients/residents by planning, implementing, and evaluating recreation programs to contribute to the patient's/resident's physical, emotional, mental, social and spiritual well-being. Participates in interdisciplinary conferences, maintains resident records and statistics and maintains recreation related equipment and materials.
Responsibilities
- Plans, implements and evaluates recreation programs and services to meet the needs of the patients/residents such as community outings, arts and crafts, cooking, discussion groups, special events, sensory stimulation and intergenerational programs.
- Participates in therapeutic recreation re-assessments through collaboration with and reporting information to the Recreation Therapist. This may involve: providing information about the patient's/resident's performance and response in programs, completing forms, reviewing records, consulting with patient/resident, family and team members to gather relevant information.
- Prepares food items with patients/residents by counting, weighing and/or measuring ingredients, mixing beverage and food items and assembling food items. Portions out and serves food and beverages and assists patients/residents with eating refreshments at programs.
- Plans and implements community outings for patients/residents as appropriate. Prepares the bus, completes a vehicle safety check to ensure the vehicle is safe for use and drives the bus.
- Provides work direction and supervision to students and volunteers in designated programs.
- Participates in interdisciplinary team and/or family conferences by methods such as providing information about patients/residents on topics related to recreation services, contributing to the development of an interdisciplinary care plan for individual patients/residents, and performing recorder functions when needed.
- Maintains resident records, statistical data, and reports in accordance with department, organizational and professional standards by methods such as maintaining resident documentation, completing resident attendance and workload measurement statistics.
- Maintains recreation equipment and materials by methods such as cleaning equipment and putting away equipment, maintaining an orderly work area and making recommendations to the Recreation Therapist and/or Therapeutic Recreation Supervisor regarding the purchase, general maintenance and repair of equipment and supplies.
- Participates in quality improvement activities by methods such as providing input to the Recreation Therapist and/or Therapeutic Recreation Supervisor on policies and procedures, departmental goals, objectives and operational plans and developing new recreation programs and services.
- Participates on committee and task groups as required.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
Graduation from a recognized two (2) year diploma program of Therapeutic Recreation.
One year's recent, related experience in recreation or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Eligible for membership with the British Columbia Therapeutic Recreation Association (BCTRA).
Successful completion of Foodsafe Course Level 1.
Valid Class IV B.C. Driver's License.
