Horse Racing Valet - Hastings Racecourse

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES:

This horse racing Valet is responsible for assisting Jockeys and ensuring that their gear, equipment and racing silks are properly prepared before and after races.

Key Accountabilities

• Saddle (in paddock) and unsaddle specified horses
• After each race, unsaddle the winning horse in the winners' circle area
• Assist jockeys with dressing and equipment adjustments before races
• Ensure equipment is clean, in good condition, and meets racing regulations
• Help organize and prepare jockeys' tack and equipment for racing
• Maintain locker and storage areas when required
• Deliver and retrieve saddles and tack from paddock before and after races
• Work closely with jockeys
• Maintain professionalism and privacy when Jockeys are undressed
• Follow all safety protocols and racetrack regulations
• Other duties as assigned

Education and Qualifications

• Must be available to work all race days in 2025 Racing season (mainly Friday, Saturday and Sundays)
• Very good working knowledge of riders' equipment and tack
• Significant experience working with and around horses in confined spaces; good general horsemanship
• Working knowledge of jockey quarters operations an asset;
• Knowledge of operations/regulations pertaining to thoroughbred horse racing preferred
• Very good inter-personal skills and organizational abilities; ability to work in a "team" setting
• Ability to work effectively without direct supervision; reliability
• Must successfully pass a criminal and credit record check by the Gaming and Policy Enforcement Branch (GPEB) - Racing Division

Work Environment Considerations

• Regular horse racing environment, standing and walking for long periods of time, and non-traditional work hours

The starting wage for this position is $17.91. Please note that this position has some additional compensation through Horse Racing BC.
