Harbour Light exists to restore hope and promote recovery in Vancouver's downtown eastside.

JOB PURPOSE:

The Kitchen Helper is responsible to assist Food Services Manager and Kitchen Supervisor with daily routine tasks to keep kitchen organized, clean and safe for food preparation.

CHARACTERISTIC JOB DUTIES:

  • Assist with sorting donation and liaise with the Loading Dock department
  • Regularly clean and organize food storage units including coolers and freezers
  • Ensure regular inventory of purchased and donated items is complete
  • Check compost, recycling and garbage bins around kitchen and replace if needed
  • Ensure the safety of clients through proper handling of food according food standards
  • Follow legislative procedures and The Salvation Army standards for clean and dirty dishes
  • Ensure appropriate disposal of food waste in accordance with regulations
  • Maintain a high level of cleanliness at all times within the kitchen and storage areas.
  • Assist with dishwashing duties when needed
  • Perform other duties as assigned

MINIMUM EDUCATION LEVEL ATTAINED:

The successful job applicant will have completed High School.

SPECIAL LICENSES, DIPLOMAS, CERTIFICATIONS OR REQUIREMENTS:

  • WHIMS
  • First Aid
  • Food Safe
  • Criminal Record Check

MINIMUM PRIOR RELATED EXPERIENCE:

Three months of prior related experience, including institutional kitchen experience or equivalent.

PHYSICAL EFFORT/DEXTERITY REQUIRED:

The performance of the job requires frequent amount of lifting, bending, stooping, stretching and standing and spending time in freezer. The incumbent is required to lift up to 50 pounds.

CONCENTRATION REQUIRED:

The performance of the job requires frequent attention to adhering to safety procedures and regulations, moderate attention when serving dishes, removing dishes and occasionally cleaning floors and kitchen equipment.

RESPONSIBILITY FOR FINANCIAL RESOURCES:

The incumbent has very little to no input in financial matters.

RESPONSIBILITY FOR HUMAN RESOURCES:

The incumbent is responsible for his/her own time and effort only. He/She may demonstrate work methods to new employees.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The incumbent's work environment is typically in a kitchen in a ministry unit/social services facility.

The incumbent will work under the following disagreeable conditions:

  • Dealing with angry people
  • Verbal Abuse
  • Hot/Steamy environment
  • Noisy
  • Crowded in some cases
  • Pressure with timelines

EXPOSURE TO HAZARDS:

The job incumbent may be exposed to the risk of moderate to severe injury or illnesses due to:

  • Physical attacks by others (verbal)
  • Exposure to toxic chemicals
  • Moving objects
  • Sharp objects
  • Electrical hazards
  • Injury from lifting
  • Falling on wet/slippery floors
  • Cuts, Burns and entering freezers

PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES:

The incumbent must take the following precautionary measures (in addition to health and safety rules):

  • Universal Precautions
  • Use of rubber mats
  • Use coats provided to go into freezers
  • Use gloves provided
  • Immunization for Hepatitis B
  • Vaccination against Tuberculosis

Compensation:

The target hiring range for this position is $24.02 to $24.40 with a maximum of $24.77.

Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
