POSITION SUMMARY:

We are excited to add to our People Team with Manager, People who will oversee a team of HR Generalists, provide advice and counsel to managers on employee and labour relations issues. The Manager, People will perform a wide variety of human resource functions to attract, develop, and retain a satisfied, people-oriented, and high performing event-based workforce. This position will offer HR support to both FT and PT employee groups of our NHL and AHL hockey clubs, NLL Lacrosse and eSports teams, head office and arena personnel, as well as our sister company, Toptable Group.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
(Other duties may be assigned as required)

Leadership
  • In collaboration with our Sr. Manager, People & HR Analytics, lead and mentor members of the People Team in day-to-day operations fostering an environment that is conducive to a collaborative, high-performance/highly motivated team, quality initiatives and continuous improvement
Client Group Support
  • Act as the key contact to supervisors and managers, providing guidance on HR related questions and handling performance related issues that arise
  • A People team Manager, provide HR Support to a team of 300 Full-time and over 3,000 Part-Time employees
  • Work event times at Rogers Arena, as required
Employee & Labour Relations
  • Investigate and handle to conclusion, what are sometimes complex complaints submitted to the People Department (e.g. harassment, human rights, union grievances etc.)
  • In collaboration with the VP, People, administer the collective agreement, labour statutes and company policies, and provide advice to managers as required
  • Support a positive labour environment by building relationships with staff, management and the Union and takes a proactive and positive approach to issue resolution
  • Collaborate with the VP, People in the collective bargaining process, as required
Recruitment & Selection
  • Take a proactive lead in exploring and executing innovative recruitment strategies attracting best-in-class full-time and event staff for Rogers Arena
  • In collaboration with the Team's People Generalists, manage the recruitment function and postings, and coach managers on general recruitment and selection issues
  • Conduct reference checks and draft employment agreements as required
Special Projects & Assignments
  • Oversee the management of immigration applications including Labour Market Impact Assessments (LMIA) for CSE and Toptable employees, ensuring utmost attention and compliance to application process
  • Proactively research, recommend and execute new, competitive and creative human resource programs and initiatives putting priority and urgency on areas requiring special attention
  • Monitor and follow up on medical leaves for employees; work closely with department managers on return-to-work accommodations
  • Work with VP, People to drive the company's internal Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives and Respectful Workplace education
  • Administer health & welfare benefits programs
  • Provide support to People Department colleagues on various social and employee engagement activities
  • Provide back-up support People Department colleagues and complete special projects and/or assignments as assigned by the VP, People

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A diploma/degree in Human Resource Management along with a minimum of 5+ years' solid generalist experience in a unionized environment, ideally in a similar industry
  • A strong understanding of all aspects of HR including but not limited to employee & labour relations, training & development, recruitment, immigration, benefits administration
  • In-depth experience in employee relations, labour relations, interpreting and administering Collective Agreements, incident investigations and grievance handling is a must
  • A positive team player with high energy and a strong client service focus
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with an ability to interact effectively with diverse client groups
  • A professional and collaborative approach to working with unions and handling LR issues
  • A strong working knowledge, experience with and interest in using HR data and HR technologies to add value to the role (e.g. business intelligence, social media, MS Office applications etc.)
  • Experience with innovative staff recruitment and retention strategies with a high volume, preferably including a large part time workforce
  • A detailed, proactive, inquisitive individual who faces challenges head on with tenacity and determination
  • Brings expertise, energy, enthusiasm and passion to motivate, inspire and connect all employees of the People team
  • Solid interpersonal and communication skills with a demonstrated ability to interact effectively with diverse clients
  • Ability to demonstrate sensitivity, objectivity, confidentiality, good judgment, and professionalism when handling complex HR issues
  • Approaches problem solving in a practical, client-centered manner, always with an urgency to resolve thoroughly and in a timely manner
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple projects quickly, efficiently and accurately
  • Must be flexible and adaptable to work evening, weekends, and holidays, as necessary, per the game and event calendar and have a passion for an event-based working lifestyle
  • To best support our dynamic sports & entertainment operations, we work 100% at the office/arena and do not offer a remote work arrangement
