Description

The Salvation Army is looking for outgoing, personable, and self-motivated individuals who want to make a positive impact in their community. If you love the art of conversation, can engage the public and inspire them to donate to the cause, then you should join our team as a Christmas Kettle Host. Every dollar raised through this program goes back into the community to help feed, clothe, and shelter those in need, while helping others escape violence and addiction.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Arrive at assigned location on time, retrieve, and set up designated Christmas Kettle from storage location; remain with Christmas Kettle until shift change or Kettle is picked up by personnel.
  • Stand near Christmas Kettle for the duration of shift; greet, smile, and collect donations from passers-by; thank donors.
  • Ensure Christmas Kettle is attended or stored away during restroom and meal breaks as per instructions given; to ensure security of Christmas Kettle and monetary donations.
  • Follow instructions of Supervisor and Coordinator; report any problems or concerns to Supervisor or Coordinator
  • Promote/refer to Salvation Army programs & services, volunteering, when opportunities arise.
  • Respond to donor questions or make appropriate referrals.
  • Collect donor's information when a request is made for a charitable tax receipt.
  • Manage inventory and request supplies when necessary.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Responsible for ensuring all cash and cheque donations are put directly and securely in the Christmas kettle at the time of donation. The incumbent is also responsible for ensuring donors are given correct instructions for processing a Tip Tap (credit or debit) donation at the kettle, if applicable.

The incumbent's work environment is typically in the community, at retail locations or outdoor sidewalks.

The incumbent will work under the following disagreeable conditions:

  • Cold or wet weather
  • Standing for extended periods

The job incumbent may be exposed to the risk of minor harm, injury, or illnesses due to:

  • Moving of kettle stand
  • Physical attacks by others (i.e., violent/aggressive client)
  • Exposure to infectious diseases
  • Other potentially dangerous situations

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

Minimum high school education or equivalency an asset

Experience:

Previous fundraising experience, customer service, and volunteer experience an asset. But Not mandatory.

  • Be punctual, reliable and community minded.
  • Positively portray The Salvation Army and reflect its mission and core values.
  • Excellent customer service skills - be friendly, courteous, positive, outgoing, flexible, task oriented, patient.
  • Work independently and without direct supervision.
  • Ability to focus on job and refrain from distractions, i.e., mobile phone use, texting, etc.
  • Excellent oral communication skills.
  • Ability to stand for prolonged periods of time.
  • Ability to lift and move objects up to 25 lbs.
  • Willingness to work indoors at high traffic retail locations.
  • Willingness to work outdoors in inclement weather.
  • Follows the dress code and be well groomed.
  • Possess and wear proper outdoor attire in inclement weather.
  • Access to phone, email, transportation, i.e., Transit, etc. for communication purposes and arriving at shifts on time.
  • Ability to attend orientation session.
  • Agrees to Standards of Conduct.

Successful candidates, prior to hiring, may be required to provide:

  • Background check consent
  • A clear vulnerable sector screening

HOURS: 10/week 2 hours a day at various locations
