Position Overview

Directly accountable to the Manager, Laundry Services, the Laundry Helper picks up bagged soiled linen from all applicable areas of the Centre for delivery to the Central Laundry Service, picks up patient/resident soiled personal clothing, launders, processes and delivers clean clothing back to applicable wards and provides laundry services to various other departments within Deer Lodge Centre. Performs all duties in accordance with established health and safety regulations/guidelines, policies and procedures (e.g. utilizing personal, protective equipment as per safe work procedures). Notifies their Manager or their designates (i.e. supervisors) of all occurrences, injuries illnesses or safety and health concerns which are likely to harm themselves, their co-workers, or any others who enter the premises.

Experience

  • No experience required.
  • On-the-job training will be provided.

Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)

  • Successful completion of Grade 12 to provincial standards or equivalent.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Demonstrates knowledge and support of:
    • The vision, values, goals, and objectives of the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority and the Deer Lodge Centre.
    • The Deer Lodge Centre's Mission Statement, Residents Bill of Rights and Code of Conduct.
    • Personal Health Information Act, Protection of Persons in Care Act, Workplace Hazardous Material Information System (WHMIS), Principles of Routine Practices (Universal Precautions).
  • Ability to communicate effectively both in verbal and written form.
  • Ability to read and follow directions in the sorting and handling of soiled/clean linen and clothing.
  • Ability to follow and complete established work routines in a timely manner.
  • Ability to work within a computerized system for labelling of patient/resident clothing.
  • Ability to maintain and complete records.
  • Reliability, alertness, cooperativeness and tact in dealing with all contacts.
  • Ability to exercise good judgement and demonstrate accountability for all interactions and responsibilities.
  • Ability to recognize the boundaries of work competencies and seek support appropriately.
  • Ability to use resources (time, supplies and equipment) efficiently.
  • Ability to function effectively and cooperatively as a team member in working collaboratively with others.

Physical Requirements

  • Physical stamina to endure long periods of standing, walking and lifting heavy objects.
  • The majority of the duties require continual standing, walking, lifting, carrying and pushing heavy wagons of linen/clothing, supplies and equipment with frequent exposure to minor injuries of muscle strains.

This position requires a current satisfactory Criminal Records Check (including Vulnerable Sector Search), Child Abuse Registry Check and Adult Abuse Registry Check as conditions of employment. The successful candidate will be responsible for any service charges incurred. A security check is considered current if it was obtained no more than six (6) months prior to the start of employment.
