JOB SUMMARY:

This position is responsible for the daily operations of and all activities conducted within the Jockey's Room, ensuring these activities are conducted within the rules of racing.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Supervising of riders, valets and officials before and during racing hours;

  • Overseeing the physical condition of the Room and supervising the kitchen facility;

  • Breathalyzer analysis of all racing officials, including reporting any discrepancies to the Stewards;

  • Recording changes for the daily race card, including scratches, overweights, owner or trainer changes, lasix changes, and delivers this information to appropriate departments (Mutuels, Tote, Broadcast, Announcer, Racing Office (bookkeeper), etc.) in a timely manner.

  • Weighing jockeys out for each race and weighing jockeys in from each race in inclement weather

  • Receiving all claims, ensuring they are delivered at appropriate time to the Stewards, performing "shakes" if needed, contacting appropriate departments regarding claim, and ensuring groom has claim slip and is present to get horse;

  • Records Jockeys' payroll daily, confirming weekly totals with Horsemen's Bookkeeper and providing Jockey payroll information to Jockeys Benevolent Association Representative;

  • Computing Valets' weekly payroll and providing information to Payroll Department, as required;

  • Providing payroll and purse distribution to Director, Thoroughbred Racing Operations;

  • Prompt reporting of any infraction of the Rules with respect to weight, riding equipment, etc. to AGCO Stewards.

  • Performing other miscellaneous duties as required by the AGCO regarding rule enforcement.

  • Registration of new owners' colours in Incompass Solutions system

  • Other special projects or various duties, as required.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

Education and Knowledge:

  • Minimum 5 years experience working with, combined with excellent knowledge of horse racing, including proper handling of and dealing with horses.

  • Grade 12 or equivalent with very good listening, verbal and interpersonal communication skills

  • Basic knowledge of racing department procedures and general understanding of the daily racing program.

  • Detailed understanding of the rules of racing as it relates to Jockeys and Jockeys' Room activities.

  • Able to prioritize conflicting priorities in a fast-paced, multi-tasking environment, combined with a strong attention to detail and the ability to perform under pressure.

  • Able to supervise, direct, and guide individuals and groups in the completion of tasks and fulfillment of goals.

Working Environment:

  • 8 hours per day on race days.

  • Exposure to normal racing conditions with most work performed indoors.
