Description

Reporting directly to the Director of Community and Family Services, the Custodian will provide general cleaning duties and small maintenance repairs, ensuring a safe and healthy environment for clients and staff. The custodian maintains the cleanliness of the facility in compliance with applicable standards.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Handle general cleaning of the entire building, including warehouse, storage rooms, front and back entrances at 432 Patrick Street.
  • Vacuuming, dusting, emptying garbage, mopping/washing floors, cleaning of front foyers, windows, doors and other glass surfaces, changing of light bulbs, dusting /cleaning ledges, baseboards, fans and surfaces in shared spaces and offices.
  • Cleans, disinfects, and restocks washroom supplies and distributes received material as required.
  • General cleaning of Kitchens to include wiping down walls, doors, counters, fridges, stoves, and microwaves.
  • Cleaning of fridges monthly.
  • Cleaning and degreasing of hood vent for Gathering Place kitchen as per fire regulations.
  • Complete a visual inspection of the premises every shift to ensure that all aspects of the housekeeping plan have been completed.
  • Transfer garbage into outdoor waste bin.
  • Outdoor maintenance to include sweeping of sidewalks and parking lot, watering and weeding of lawn, shrubs and flower areas.
  • Shoveling sidewalks and entrances.
  • Order custodial supplies.
  • Assist in warehouse or food room on occasion, when accepting large food shipments or food drive donations to the warehouse.
  • Option to provide holiday coverage at Kingston Citadel.

Building Maintenance- Health and Safety

  • Perform weekly check of the building to include fire extinguishers, emergency lighting notifying supervisor of any deficiencies.
  • Check perimeter of building daily for needles and drug paraphernalia, discarding found items using safe disposal procedures.
  • Responsible for fire logbook and related inspections.
  • Complete maintenance inspection checklist monthly.
  • Handle any minor building repairs as required.
  • Ensure that the work area is maintained regarding appearance, condition and safety as recommended by Public Health etc.
  • Monitor and maintain mixed cleaner bottles for custodial use. Ensure that all bottles contain WHMIS compliant labeling.
  • Work in compliance with the OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army's health and safety policies and procedures.

Community Gardens

  • Weed, water, and maintain community gardens and aeroponic indoor garden system as required.

Perform other related duties as required.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • This is a permanent part-time position based on 20 hours per week.
  • The position is available immediately.
  • Ability to lift/move up to 40 pounds.
  • This job requires standing, kneeling and walking.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Completion of high school. Any specialized training or experience would be considered an asset.
  • First Aid & CPR Certification an asset.

EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE:

  • Minimum of one (1) year of prior related experience including life skills, custodial, and general familiarity with cleaning and maintenance procedures and equipment.
  • Knowledge of Health & Safety Standards.

Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.

SKILLS AND CAPABILITIES:

  • Bilingual in English and French an asset.
  • Treat the property of The Salvation Army with due care and caution.
  • Ability to work independently and participate as an active and responsible team member in a cooperative team environment.
  • Ability to sustain the daily routine of moderate to heavy lifting, reaching, and bending.
  • Adaptability to changes and interruptions in normal work routine.
  • Commitment to maintaining confidentiality with regard to guest and customer operations.
  • Organized.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army's health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check screening.
  • Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
