The Environment Section is looking for a summer intern who is passionate about the environment and environmental issues such as climate change, sustainability, and waste management to join our team. As part of the Environment team, you will assist in the development and implementation of climate change education and engagement programming and support the implementation of the Climate Change Action Plan.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Climate Change Policy Supervisor, the successful candidate(s) will:

  • Assist with the implementation of key actions within the City's Climate Change Action Plan, including the development and delivery of neighbourhood-level climate engagement programs, resilience hubs, and the Peel Zero Emission Vehicle Strategy;
  • Support the development and delivery of presentations, surveys, workshops, and training sessions;
  • Assist with event planning and logistics;
  • Collect and generate reports regarding public feedback from engagement sessions;
  • Represent the Environment Section at events;
  • Assist with environmental behavior-change campaigns and toolkits for residential climate action, including drafting social media content and promotional marketing;
  • Provide quality customer service and act as a knowledgeable resource;
  • Provide general support to the Environment's Climate Change Programs and Climate Change Policy teams, as required;
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Secondary School Diploma;
  • Special consideration will be given to candidates that have previous, related experience in community development, event planning and outreach, as well as interest and/or experience in environmental issues, communications, public relations, and marketing;
  • Excellent organization and time management skills are required;
  • Excellent communication skills (public speaking, presentations, writing), including the ability to communicate with a diverse audience, is required;
  • Ideal candidates are self-starters with the ability to work well independently and as part of a cooperative team environment
  • Demonstrated ability to apply excellent customer service skills with the public and City staff;
  • Demonstrated skill with Microsoft Office Suite applications and databases;
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including holidays, weekends, early mornings and evenings as required (up to 35 hours per week);
  • A valid Class "G" Ontario Driver's License and an excellent driving record is desired;
  • Some heavy lifting will be required (30-50lb work-related equipment).

Hourly Rate/Salary: 19.22 - 22.84
