Job Summary

Organize and deliver a comprehensive Skating program to meet the needs of all participants registered in the program and provide supervision and leadership to Skating Instructors and volunteers.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Teach basic to advanced skills through group lessons as outlined in defined lesson levels. Group sizes vary from 3 to 12 participants.
  • Ensure the continuing safety of all participants during group lessons.
  • Organize, plan and implement the activities at the start and end of each program (warm up and cool downs).
  • Ensure the continuing safety of all participants during these activities
  • Prepare weekly lesson plans including warmup and cool down sessions for group instruction
  • Plan fun day activities for final day of programs for all participants
  • Ensure program plans meet Course Objectives and HIGH FIVE Principles and Design Guidelines
  • Supervise, provide guidance and evaluations for Skating Instructors during lesson blocks.
  • Review lesson plans on weekly basis/as requested to ensure staff are planning and executing appropriate instruction.
  • Review prepared progress reports for suitability
  • Place volunteers in groups and provide feedback
  • Provide quality customer service to parent and participants on an ongoing basis.
  • Post signs providing information to participants about upcoming activities or announcements.
  • Deal with customer complaints regarding instructor classes or pass/fails in classes
  • Deal with participants/parents when inappropriate skates or safety equipment (ie not having a CSA approved helmet thereby restricting their participation)
  • Dealing with parents when moving children classes due to skill level
  • Ensure visual safety check of ice is completed to ensure program can run safely, report any issues to facility staff
  • Ensure that all participants are properly registered.
  • Record attendance daily for each class.
  • Submit payroll variations and volunteer hours
  • Complete staff evaluations
  • Order and distribute the appropriate number of progress cards, labels and seals to Instructors for the various testable programs.
  • Complete a progress card and comment for each student in a testable program. Distribute and explain the progress card to the student on the last day of the program.
  • Send unclaimed progress cards to office for mailing
  • Ensure that equipment is safe and in good repair, where new equipment is required inform supervisor
  • Responsible for locking equipment up at the end of each program day

Skills and Qualifications

  • Junior Bronze Skills as recognized by Skate Canada (or equivalent)
  • Emergency First Aid with CPR B
  • Principles of Health Child Development (PHCD) or High 5 Sport
  • Minimum 2 sessions instructing with the City of Mississauga Skating Program
  • Previous supervisory experience is an asset
  • Past evaluations must be exceeding expectations level of performance
  • Exposure to cold working conditions
  • Primarily arena environment

Hourly Rate/Salary: $28.34 - $37.78
Hours of Work: 5 hours per week
