Responsibilities

Reporting to the Manager, Health and Wellness Services, the Registered Nurse (RN) will function in close collaboration with physicians, Nurse Practitioner (NP), Medical secretary and Psychiatrist. The RN will have the responsibility and accountability for providing quality client care. This is achieved by utilization of total holistic assessment, treatment and counselling, education and consultative services, provision of health promotion and disease prevention initiatives, triage, performing technical nursing intervention and case management.

Nursing Clinical Care (80%)

  • The RN triages all walk-in patients and provides primary nursing care;
  • RN is responsible for triaging, assessing, monitoring, implementing a treatment plan for clients at various stages within the continuum of health and illness (physical, emotional, psychological and spiritual). Focus on prevention and management of disease (i.e., hypertension, and sexually transmitted infections) and refer to the physician/NP for management of complex clients;
  • Perform routine assessments such as blood pressure, vision test, weight, height, and administer injections (Allergy, Tuberculin Skin Tests (TST), Immunizations, as ordered by physician/NP). Perform point-of care diagnostic tests such as urine pregnancy test, urinalysis, Strep A throat swab; and
  • Ensure all assessment findings are documented accurately via Electronic Medical Records (EMR) and RN contacts clients re: results, follow-ups, assists with referrals.

Administrative (10%)

  • Participate in staff and committee meetings as required;
  • Act as Preceptor to Nursing students;
  • Order, maintain inventory for Medication (Samples and Crash kit), Vaccines, and medical supplies;
  • Replacement of Administrative Assistant (Medical Secretary) during her absence. Functions include Appointment scheduling, EMR reports, SRFax, Referrals); and
  • Reprocessing of sterile equipment maintenance of autoclave, appropriate record keeping and maintenance records. Training through Infection Prevention and Control Practices (IPAC).

Health Promotion/Disease Prevention (10%)

  • Organize and maintain supply of health pamphlets/posters/online resources and help clients' access resources;
  • Assist in the planning, implementing and evaluating of health themes/campaigns/programs on campus;
  • Initiate health education that will assist, promote and support clients as they strive to gain optimum health; and
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing;
  • Specialty courses through Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) such as Occupational Health Nursing, Community Health Nursing is an asset;
  • Current Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO);
  • Current Standard First Aid and CPR Certificate;
  • Current Defibrillation Certificate;
  • Mental Health First Aid (MHFA), Suicide Prevention Certificates (SafeTalk, ASIST);
  • Three (3) to five (5) years of experience;
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills;
  • Advanced knowledge of computer software (Microsoft Office Suite, Google Chrome, Excel, PS Suite (Telus EMR) is required;
  • Ability to use Internet tools and social media is required. Telephone and faxing skills.
  • Espouse health promotion and disease prevention approaches;
  • Maintain and develop professional competence through ongoing professional development;
  • WHMIS Certification;
  • AODA; and
  • Ability to work fluently (verbal and written) in both official languages, French and English, is required.

The official University hours of operation shall be from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, during, and including, the months from September to April, and from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m Monday through Friday during and including May to August., amounting to thirty-three and three-quarter (33.75) hours per week.
