Job Description

Reporting directly to the Logistics Manager, the Dock Supervisor supervises and oversees team of dockhands during a specified shift to ensure the safe, timely and efficient day-to-day operations of all ramps, loading docks and elevators during event move in/out periods. The incumbent is responsible for the scheduling/coordination of all Dock Departmental functions. The Dock Supervisor ensures that contractors and exhibitors perform in accordance with MTCC's policies and procedures; ensures that fire safety protocols are adhered to on the loading docks; reports all incidents/situations on the loading docks to relevant staff members/departments as applicable.

Employee Relations:

  • Supervises staff throughout their shift to ensure job responsibilities/tasks are being adhered to.
  • Assist in ensuring that all staff adhere and comply with health and safety guidelines as per the building and their collective bargaining agreement.
  • Assist Logistics Manager in training new Dockhands on MTCC and Docks department procedures and ensure existing staff take ownership for their job duties and hold themselves as well as other departments accountable
  • Communicate clear performance expectations to staff.
  • Conducts Facility Inspection with Show Management/Show Decorator prior to move-in and following move out and maintains visible presence throughout event to build client confidence.

Rentals and Inventory:

  • Tracks propane inventory
  • Responsible for forklift and dolly rentals
  • Supports show management and exhibitors
  • Monitors the Marshalling Yard for revenue
  • Supervises and plans the installation of the Blackout drape

Interpersonal Contacts:

  • Consults with Catering & Events Departments concerning Docks move in/out schedules and client needs prior to arrival and departure.
  • Promotes and sells Docks in-house services and rental equipment (forklift rental, propane, on/off site storage, black out drape, etc.).
  • Contacts exhibitors/general contractors and/or other service providers regarding their move in / move out needs and ensure any request is dealt with in a timely manner.
  • Assist with addressing questions or complaints from customers.
  • Liaise with external vendors concerning service repairs as applicable and note timelines for repair based on future business and event related needs.
  • Attends pre-convention, site and internal meetings in the absence of the Manager.

Level of Responsibility:

  • Provides leadership and support to Dockhands and internal colleagues.
  • Ensure proper training, direction, and information is provided to Dockhands so that each event is set-up for success resulting in an efficient, safe and timely move-in/out
  • Take ownership pertaining to situations/correspondence that arise and ensure these are dealt with in a timely manner and with a high degree of professionalism and recorded for follow-up if needed.
  • Listen to guest/staff feedback and review all logistics post event, to determine all pros and cons that may have occurred and revisit policies, procedures/best practices and make recommendations.
  • Provide input regarding the innovation and creativity in our approach to customer relations.
  • Monitor the Dock reservations application; ensuring customer's needs are being met.

Decision Making Authority:

  • Position requires the ability to solve problems regarding staffing, scheduling changes, equipment malfunction and floor safety.
  • Ability to address client requests and concerns in a timely manner that provides the best resolution for the client, while adhering to MTCC policies and best practices.
  • Required to make decisions without supervision in a calm, confident and decisive manner, relating but not limited to exhibitor issues, event related situations and staff conflicts.

Administrative Duties:

  • Review Event Plans and Weekly Operational Reports in order to create a work schedule for unionized employees (Dockhands).
  • Keep a document of Dockhands schedules, time off requests, sick days and vacation requests.
  • Assist with creating and monitoring performance goals and deadlines that align with MTCC and Docks department objectives.
  • Assist in conducting and scheduling quarterly department meetings and departmental training seminars/sessions (when applicable).
  • Complete day-to-day event billing and accounting and update any notes for all related events.
  • Complete necessary paperwork/data input accurately and in a timely manner to ensure an efficient and steady flow of information.
  • Responsible for rental, inventory control and working condition of Dock Department essential event related equipment including forklift, propane, marshalling yard, and blackout drape.
  • Any other assignments as delegated by Logistics Manager.

Job Skills and Requirements

  • Completion of High School Diploma
  • 6 months to 1 year of work experience with knowledge of trade show business
  • Must possess skills in leadership and interpersonal development
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment, prioritize workloads, meet deadlines and work under pressure
    • Must have computer literacy skills with an emphasis on EBMS, Workforce, and ADACO systems an asset
