Do you have experience within a large food services operation? If so, bring your culinary skills to the Toronto East Detention Centre where you will prepare, cook, and assemble standard and special diet meals in a conventional institutional kitchen.
Please note: • This position is temporary, on-call working up to 40 hours per week (with no guaranteed minimum number of hours each week) and requires the ability to perform shift work of 8 or 10 hours per day, 7 days per week • This position requires working with and providing direction to inmate helpers (and will be eligible for a Custodial Responsibility Allowance)

What can I expect to do in this role?
• Prepare and assemble a wide variety of food, including complete meals, restricted diets, salads, snacks and beverages in a large institution • Oversee proper handling as well as timely production and service of meals • Ensure proper storage, preparation, and portion control standards are met • Provide direction and instructions to inmate helpers • Maintain an inventory of supplies • Ensure the safety and security of helpers, staff and equipment • Maintain proper sanitary conditions in the kitchen area • Other duties, as assigned
How do I qualify?
Mandatory
• You have a Cook's certificate issued by the appropriate Ministry or acceptable equivalent knowledge/experience in volume cooking • You have a valid Food Handler Certificate (either currently OR previously certified and can obtain re-certification upon hire)
Food Services Knowledge and Skills
• You have knowledge of volume cooking/baking methods and safety principles • You can prepare and assemble a high volume of meals • You have knowledge and experience with various diets (i.e. lifestyle, medical, religious) • You have knowledge of food safety practices • You have knowledge of health and safety practices and standards • You have demonstrated ability to understand and follow organizational policies/protocols in order to acquire knowledge of institutional policies and maintain safety and security of kitchen
Communication and Team Leadership Skills
• You can work with staff, inmate helpers, and service providers to address issues • You have team leadership skills to provide instruction and direction to helpers on cooking methods and kitchen cleanliness as well as appraise performance • You have written communication skills to prepare various reports
Other Essential Skills
• You have analytical and problem-solving skills to identify, assess, and resolve equipment/appliance malfunctions, supply shortage, sanitation and hygiene control, and food service issues • You have basic computer skills to input, track and record data
