Job Description:

POSITION PURPOSE SUMMARY:
This position provides support and ensures the smooth running of the dining hall to meet the needs of the summer camping program.

ACCOUNTABILITIES:
The incumbent may perform all, some, or similar range of duties.
Administration
• Coordinate the placement and serving of special dietary restriction meals
• Coordinate service of meals, and help serve, when necessary (in partnership with the Cooks on duty)
• Create schedule for Dining Hall attendants, including for evening snack
• Assist Head Cook with staff scheduling, coaching/training and supervision
• Be familiar with Summer Staff Handbook, and all procedures and resources
General Duties
• Work with Food Services Supervisor in preparing meals and other assigned duties
• Help with putting food away after meals in adherence with Food Safe guidelines
• Assist in the constant cleanliness and sanitation of the Dining Hall (inside and outside), including all surfaces, staff kitchen area, breakfast serving area, tables and chairs, outdoor picnic tables, dry storage.
• Facilitate mealtime programs and delegate roles as needed (ex: coordinate theme meals, lead grace, facilitate cabin award/table award/lost & found, etc.).
• Participate in camp cleanup at the end of each camp.
• Be available to attend all staff devotions and meetings.
• Attend weekly debriefing sessions at the end of each camp.
Coordination & Supervision
• Supervise, encourage, and mentor Kitchen Support Staff.
• Coordinate and supervise the dining room and kitchen duties related to serving meals in a dignified and orderly manner including the following details:
- Setting up tables and chairs neatly and correctly
- Serving meals efficiently and courteously
- Removal of waste, dirty dishes, etc. during meals
- Preparing dishes for dishwasher (scraping food off dishes)
- Washing of assigned tables and chairs and sweeping floor
- Other specific details of keeping the dining room clean
- Special cleaning responsibilities during change of camps
- Serve evening snack as assigned
- Operate dishwasher, washing dishes and keeping it clean at all times. Prepare the dishwasher 30 minutes before meals.
- Report any operational difficulties to the Operations Manager immediately
- Coordinate floor washing daily
- Assign washing pots, sweeping kitchen, pantry and serving areas, emptying garbage cans
• Maintain a responsible level of maturity and leadership.
• Performs other work-related duties as assigned.

CRITICAL RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT:
Internal: Camp Leadership, Camp Team
External: Summer campers

MANAGERIAL/TECHNICAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Reports directly to the Corps Officer or designate.
Direct reports: none.

FINANCIAL AND MATERIAL MANAGEMENT:
• Assist with receiving and stocking food and kitchen supply orders.
• Use of various cleaning chemicals and tools (ex: broom, mop, vacuum, etc.).
• Possible use of kitchen tools and appliances (ex: knives, stove/oven, dishwasher, etc.)
The above responsibilities must be discharged in accordance with The Salvation Army's Mission Statement, in a professional manner, upholding our code of conduct.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
• The individual will live onsite with meals and accommodation provided.
• This position requires long hours standing on hard surfaces.
• This position requires individuals to work in close proximity to others in a fast-paced and sometimes crowded environment. The work can be physically taxing and requires good mobility.
• This position requires individuals to keep hair clean, orderly and properly fixed (i.e. wear hat.
• This position requires individuals to wear appropriate footwear and clothing (i.e. close-toe shoes and pants/capris only).
• This position requires individuals to maintain clean and tidy living accommodations.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS:
• Willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
• Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army's health and safety policies and procedures.
Alternative combination of education and experience may be considered.
Education, Qualifications and Certifications:
• Completed some high school.
• Culinary education and training will be considered as an asset.
• Food Safe Certification preferred.
• Standard First Aid + CPR & AED (Intermediate First Aid).
• Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.
Experience and Knowledge:
• Up to 1 year of experience working in a busy kitchen/food preparation & service environment preferred.
Skills and Capabilities:
• Clearance through internal Salvation Army child & youth abuse prevention protocols.
• Work within the total camp program and cooperate with other staff members.
• Flexible and have a good disposition.
• Able to maintain a responsible level of maturity and leadership.
• Able to lift, carry or move up to 29 lbs.

Compensation:

The target hiring range for this position is $15.00 to $17.83 with a maximum of $21.40.

Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
