Description

This position provides required sanitation and cleaning. The incumbent is part of a team responsible for the provision of a safe and comfortable building environment.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Accountabilities:

1. Custodial duties:

· Ensure the upkeep of the facility i.e., empty all garbage receptacles, put garbage out for designated garbage day, vacuum all carpeted areas, sweep all tiled areas, wash floors and baseboards in tiled areas, clean all glass areas; windows and ledges etc. using a ladder where/when needed, dust all offices and furnishings.

  • Clean and polish sinks, toilets and counter tops, mirrors, and fixtures.
  • Clean washrooms (toilets, sinks, floors), restock washrooms supplies and distribute received material as required.
  • Wipe down all tables, chairs and door handles.
  • Checks, cleans, moves, arranges, and dusts furniture as required.
  • Reports any damage, safety concerns or deficiencies of property, equipment, or furnishings to the Corps Officer.
  • Identify/report to Corps Officer any repairs that may require an external service provider.
  • Report needed cleaning items to supervisor, for order/purchase as required.
  • Check doors and windows to ensure building security.
  • Perform a minor repair such as change light bulbs.
  • Report to supervisor a need for floors to be stripped and waxed and/or carpets shampooed.
  • Maintain the security of property at all times.
  • Ensure the general upkeep of external property such as keeping sidewalks and entrances clear of snow and ice, including salting and litter pick up.
  • Health and Safety
  • Contribute to the safety of staff, guests, customers, and clients (e.g., clear fire exits, cleans spillage; no obstacles inside/outside the building, keeping sidewalks and entrances clear of snow and ice, including salting, litter pick up etc.)
  • Ensures proper storage, labeling and care of cleaning equipment and supplies.
  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army's health and safety policies and procedures.
2. Administrative and other

· Maintains, and keeps organized, supplies required for site operation.

· Completes daily logs of tasks performed.

· Assists in event setup and takedown.

· Participate in fund raising and other such events

· Provide support & assistance with the Christmas Kettle Campaign

· May participate in annual safety inspections

· Perform other position-related duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

Education/Certifications:

  • High School Diploma
  • WHMIS training
  • Alternative combination of education and experience may be considered.

Experience:

· Basic experience in custodial duties

PREFERRED SKILLS/CAPABILITIES:

Adhere to standards that are consistent with the values & philosophy of The Salvation Army and Whitehorse Corps.

· As required and as applicable, make suggestions that will improve efficiency, working conditions or procedures to Management.

· Participate in regular direct supervision with immediate supervisor and comply by attending to noted areas needing improvement to ensure maximum job performance.

· Participate in yearly formal evaluation.

· Represent the organization in a positive, professional, and engaging manner.

· Be punctual and work all hours scheduled, advising immediate supervisor anytime this is not possible.

· Participate in staff development as required.

· Work as an effective member of the Whitehorse Corps team, whether staff members or volunteers.

· Must be physically able to stand and/or walk for long periods of time, being on their feet all day.

· Able to lift, push, and pull various items such as custodial equipment, furniture, and other items, up to 50 lbs.

· Able to climb, and work from, ladders at heights of up to 15 feet.

· Attention to detail, problem solving and analytical skills.

· Self-directed and able to take initiative.

· Able to communicate and work well with people.

· Must comply with all Salvation Army policies, procedures, and associated legislation.

· Provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required. The screening is secured either through the national Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) or through a local police detachment.

  • Valid Yukon Driver's License required for use of Salvation Army program vehicle; an original copy of a current Driver's Abstract that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required.
  • Screening through The Salvation Army Abuse Registry.
  • Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.

Successful candidates, prior to hiring, may be required to provide:

  • Background check consent
  • A clear vulnerable sector screening
  • A clean drivers abstract
  • Completion of our online Praesidium Abuse Prevention Training and required Health and Safety training
