A review of hirings and dismissals – June 2023

Companies have recently made layoffs while others have announced the hiring of new employees. Balance sheet.

Hiring

The Entosystem company, which produces insect-based proteins, opened a new factory in Drummondville at the end of May. It is actively recruiting to fill the 70 jobs that have just been created.

Federal government investments are expected to create hundreds of jobs for members of Indigenous communities in southern Ontario. The Indigenous Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, an Indigenous business incubator, will offer business skills training, access to financing and mentoring, among other things.

Elections Canada hires election workers to fill positions in the run-up to by-elections, including some as federal returning officers or those responsible for managing and controlling federal elections within an electoral district.

Work on the future Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Ottawa has begun and should generate nearly 1,900 direct and indirect jobs in the region, both for the construction and for the operation of the establishment.

Yoga apparel manufacturer Alo Yoga is currently hiring across multiple departments across its Canadian locations. About ten positions are posted, the majority of them in Calgary.

Dismissals

Suncor Energy Inc., Canada’s second-largest oil producer, will cut 1,500 jobs by the end of the year. This is in order to reduce its expenses and improve its financial performance.

The telecommunications company Telus recently launched a voluntary departure program which could affect several hundred of its employees. The company said it made the decision following significant investments in customer service technology.

Atlas Global, a cannabis company, is laying off about 50 workers and closing a factory in rural Alberta. Activities will be relocated to Ontario.

Binance, a global cryptocurrency exchange, has announced that it is halting operations in Canada due to new regulatory standards that have become too restrictive. It reportedly intends to lay off 20% of its workforce in June.

Canadian company TC Energy will cut a number of jobs, according to a spokesperson, who did not give details on the number of positions affected. A difficult decision, but “ necessary to optimize the value of [the] company ”, he declared.
